The ACAMUG Discussion List

This is an email based discussion list intended to keep our members informed of important user group related news and provide for open member-to-member discussions between meetings.

After you subscribe to the list (see below) you can use your normal email application to compose and send messages to the list at discuss@acamug.org where they are re-distributed to everyone who has subscribed. Messages from other members as well as important group announcements arrive as standard email in your in-box. Ask for help with a problem, list things you want to get rid of, request things you need, point out a useful article, all the things you'd normally do at a meeting you can now do between them.

You can browse the archives of previous posts by visiting The ACAMUG List Archives. NOTE: The list archives are currently not available pending a group decision.

DISCLAIMER: This list is intended for use only by our members. While we don't currently prevent others from subscribing, we reserve the right to do so and to remove anyone who abuses it. Advertising is not welcome, flame wars will be doused. Keep it light folks.

The standard site-wide sidebar is not available on this page, click on the banner image at the top to return to the main site. Direct your comments and questions concerning the list to listmaster@acamug.org.

Joining the List

Before you can either post or receive list messages you must first subscribe to it by providing us with the email address to use for sending and receive messages and optionally your real name and a password. The password is only needed to change your list settings or to unsubscribe from the list. Please do not use the same password you use to protect valuable accounts as it will be periodically sent to you in an unencrypted password reminder message. If you leave it blank you'll receive a randomly generated password in the confirmation email sent after your subscription is confirmed. You can request a password reminder if you ever forget it.

Format:  Individual Messages   Daily Digest

The default is to receive each message individually shortly after it is sent to the list. Choose Daily Digest to receive a single daily message with all posts from that day.

After filling in the form click the Subscribe button then in a few minutes you'll receive a confirmation message. You must use the link in that message to confirm your subscription to actually join the list (a safety measure to prevent others from adding you to the list without your knowledge.)

Changing Your List Options

You can control many aspects of how list messages are delivered to you by way of your individual list options page. That is also where you can unsubscribe from this list or temporarily suspend it if you know you will not be answering email for more than a few days. Please don't forget to do this, otherwise your in-box may fill with unread list messages until they eventually get bounced back to the list server at which time your subscription may be automatically suspended or cancelled. You can access your list options via this form:

To unsubscribe from Discuss, get a password reminder, or change your subscription options enter your subscription email address:

If you leave the field blank, you will be prompted for your email address

Be sure to at least browse through these settings at least once so you know what aspects of the list you can control.

Receiving List Messages

List messages are sent directly to your email in-box where they can be easily distinguished from your normal email by the list name prefix on the Subject line. You can use this to create Mail filters to automatically direct them to a special folder or assign them distinct colors in the in-box list. The bottom of each message contains a link to the list's info page and, when allowed, the email address for posts.

You have a choice to either receive each message individually or in a digested batch. You can switch between these two formats at any time via the settings page.

Receiving Just the Announcements

The discussion list is used for both general member discussions and announcements of group related news from Board members, including monthly meeting reminders. If you don't feel like wading through the daily discussions you can choose to receive only the announcements by enabling Topic filtering in your options. Turn ON Announcements in the Filter Messages by Topic section and for non-topic general discussion messages choose Don't Receive. You should also turn OFF Daily Digest mode since it is not necessary.

Use of List Content

The message content and subscriber data for the ACAMUG Discussion List is intended only for the private use of its members, all commercial use is expressly forbidden without prior written permission from the current ACAMUG Board of Directors. Subscriber data such as names and email addresses should be considered private and may not be used for any mass mailing or data collection purposes.

Posting List Messages

Once you have subscribed to the list you can post your own message by composing it in your favorite email client (Mail for example), filling in an appropriate subject then send it to discuss@acamug.org. You must send the message via the same email address that you used to subscribe or your message will be rejected, with a suitable explanation.

Announcements from Board members use subject lines that start with MEETING::, FYI:: or ANNOUNCEMENT:: so please do not use these prefixes for your message subjects. They are reserved for use on official announcements only!

Replying to a List Message

Hitting the Reply button in your email client will create a new message addressed to the original sender of the list message, not the list itself unless you are using Digest mode. If your reply is appropriate to the full list be sure to change the TO address to discuss@acamug.org before sending it.

Also, be sure to quote a relevant portion of the original message, and only a relevant portion, in your reply to give it some context. In most mail clients if you select a block of text in the original message before hitting Reply that text will be quoted (indented with leading ">"s on each line) in the new message. Insert your reply text above, below or between the quoted lines.

Daily Digest subscribers should be especially careful in this regard as hitting the Reply button may, by default, quote the entire digest in your reply.

Posting Etiquette

Keep in mind that what you post is going to wind up in the in-box of many people, including some you might not know. Content should be relatively brief, say a page or two at most, and text only. Please don't send attachments and keep embedded content such as images to an absolute minimum. Instead include a URL (link) that points to where the item can be viewed or downloaded, whether from a public site or your own personal web space.

Posts should be limited to matters directly relevant to the group. Use direct email for personal discussions rather than echoing it into everyone else's in-box. Recommendations for products you use and enjoy are fine, advertisements are not. Spammers and list trolls will be unceremoniously booted and flame wars doused with extreme prejudice. Keep it light folks, we're supposed to be enjoying ourselves.

Here's a simple general rule: if you wouldn't say it face-to-face or in front of other people, then don't post it. Keep it friendly, keep it cordial, avoid personal attacks. When you think you're ready to send your post always take a minute to re-read it. If you're angry about something, wait an hour then read it again and see if you still want to send it. Its easy to say things you don't mean when you aren't looking someone in the face and once you hit that Send button its too late to take it back.

Copyright & Privacy Issues

Please be very careful if you post content from other sources such as web sites or email. You must have prior permission if you are quoting more than a sentence or paragraph and the text is protected by copyright. Instead, choose a relevant brief quote and provide a link to the original source.

When quoting from an email message be considerate and get permission from the sender first. They may consider the content to be private and might not appreciate it being shared with the world.
