Apple has announced some of the new features to be introduced iPhone OS 3.0, the next major iPhone/iPod touch operating system upgrade, scheduled to drop this Summer. Among the highlights:
For iPhone users:
- Cut/Copy/Paste!!!
- Spotlight search across all iPhone applications
- Access the Net from your laptop via your 3G iPhone
- Support for the wide “landscape” keyboard in more Apple apps
- MMS messaging to send photos, audio, etc via SMS messages (3G only)
- Calendar app supports CalDAV (Google & Yahoo) and .ics (iCal) formats
- Bluetooth stereo audio (3G only)
- Sync your Notes with ITunes
- Shake to Shuffle like the iPod nano
For iPhone Developers:
- Network with nearby devices without an explicit Wi-Fi network
- Apps can control add-on hardware
- Push notification for non-running apps
- Voice communications between devices
- Application subscriptions in addition to purchases
- In-app content purchases
- In-app maps
- Turn-by-turn navigation support
iPhone OS 3.0 will be released this Summer and will be a free upgrade for all iPhone users, however some hardware dependent features will not work on he original iPhone. iPod touch users will be able to upgrade for $9.95
