Apple has updated the MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines today. The Pro inherits the iMac style aluminum case with black bordered, glossy screen. The low end white plastic MacBook is $100 cheaper at $999 and there are two additional models that are essentially 13″ versions of the MacBook Pro with the same styling and many of the same features. The MacBook Air was also updated with some of the same new features.
NOTE: The new MacBooks do not have a Firewire port and do not support Target Mode! They use USB exclusively. The MacBook Pros include Firewire 800 which is compatible with Firewire 400 via a simple cable.
New Cinema Displays: LED backlight, MagSafe connector to power your laptop, 3 port USB hub, integrated microphone and iSight camera, stereo speakers for $899, available in November.
New Features:
- Aluminum Unibody construction: more durable for less weight (same as MacBook air)
- Larger glass button-less multi-touch trackpad (not a screen, just a glass surface)
- LED backlit screen (less power, quicker start up than the old fluorescents)
- New mini display connector (and a new set of adapters to buy)
- Access to the optical and hard drives through the battery compartment for easier swaps/upgrades
- Optional Solid State Hard Drive
- More environmentally friendly design and construction

I really think the new Macbooks are more of a step backwards than forward. I’m not sure if a style upgrade and a new chipset can offset a $200 price increase, loss of Firewire and the presumed wireless reception degradation due to a shift to an aluminum enclosure. I’m sure there are also a lot of disappointed people who were hoping for a NEW sub $1000 Mac. Not just a lower priced leftover.
Another issue for us may be the new Mini DisplayPort. Currently, Apple is not selling an adapter to go from DisplayPort to an SVideo/Composite video output. Does the projected at ACCC support VGA and/or DVI?
