Bean – A Compact, Elegant and FREE Word processor

April 21st, 2008 in General

Just thought members might be interested in checking out Bean an interesting little freeware word processor. It is not nor is it intended to be a replacement for any full featured application like Microsoft Word or OpenOffice. It is however a compact, very capable, easy to use editor that can probably handle the bulk of your typical word processing needs. And it’s free.

Straight from its author, here are a few reasons you might want to use Bean:

  • Bean is lean, fast, and uncluttered.
  • If you get depressed at the thought of firing up MS Word or OpenOffice, try Bean.
  • If you use Text Edit but have to jump through hoops just to get a word count or change the margins, try Bean.
  • If you desire a simple, beautiful writing environment, try Bean.

And for the true control freaks, you can even download the source code and build your own version of Bean if you wish.

And did I mention that it’s free?

A Switcher’s First Impressions

April 11th, 2008 in General

Not long ago I got an interesting email from an old friend: he was planning to take the plunge and buy a Mac! Well he did it and after a slightly rocky start Bob seems to be really getting into his new toy.

Of course I told him the tradition of “unboxing” photos for Apple products and here’s the result:

Now you might not think this is exactly a rave review but from a guy who once had to evaluate a piece of commercial software when we worked at Franklin Computer together and who, on a scale of 1 to 10, rated it a -35, trust me he really likes his iMac so far.

And by the way, the ACAMUG web site spent its first few years on Bob’s servers at Waterwheel Systems. And he didn’t even charge us for it!

Topic
iPhoto 7 & Aperture 2.1
Who
John Doherty of the Atlantic City Apple Store
When
Friday April 11th 2008, 7:30pm – 10pm
Where
Room M129, Building M, ACCC Mays Landing Campus

Our local Atlantic City Apple Store has graciously volunteered to do an occasion presentation for us and the first will be given by John Doherty who will talk about Apple’s flagship photo management applications: iPhoto version 7 (part of iLife 08) and it’s big brother Aperture version 2.1. Most of us are probably familiar already with iPhoto but this will be a great opportunity to learn about the professional level features of Aperture.

Let’s show John our appreciation with a healthy turnout.

Presentation topics may change so be sure to verify on the day of the meeting. Got questions you’d like to have answered? Feel free to post them as comments before the meeting so the presenters have a chance to prepare.
