Reminder: Dave Marra Coming in March

February 26th, 2008 in ACAMUG

Just a reminder that our featured presenter for the March 14th meeting will be the ever-popular Dave Marra. His presentations are always fun and jam-packed with info so plan now to attend this meeting and invite friends, co-workers, potential switchers and anyone else you think might benefit from it. Dave’s coming a long way so we want to make sure he’s got a good crowd.

If you aren’t a member of ACAMUG please feel free to come and enjoy the presentation, even if you don’t own a Mac. This is a great chance to see the latest in Apple hardware and software and get buying advice from our members. All skill levels are welcome, from Guru to “how do I turn this thing on?”

If you’ve been waiting until it was safe to buy a new portable Mac your wait is over. Available immediately, Apple has announced updates to both their MacBook and MacBook Pro laptop notebook computers.

The MacBook Pro gets the more significant update with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors and NVIDIA graphics chips, faster speeds (up to 2.6GHz), larger hard drives, 2GB memory standard and the same multi-touch trackpad that was introduced with the MacBook air last month.

The MacBooks receive a speed bump and larger hard drives but no multitouch trackpad.

Mac OS X 10.5.2 Update Available

February 11th, 2008 in Apple, Updates

Apple has just released Mac OS X 10.5.2, the latest update to “Leopard”, and it’s a huge one. Literally hundreds of fixes and improvements:

It is available via Software Update n the Apple menu or, for potentially fewer problems, download and run the (300MB) combo updater from here:

Before doing either it’s probably a good idea to launch the Disk Utility application from the Utilities folder of the Applications folder, highlight your hard drive in the list on the left, then run both Verify Disk and Repair Disk Permissions to ensure your startup disk has no problems.

After updating to 10.5.2 you should also download and install:

As it is “recommended for all users and improves the stability and compatibility of your Mac”. It requires 10.5.2 so it must be installed after you update.

In addition to the bug fixes some of you will be happy to hear that Apple has provided options to restore the 10.4 behavior for folders in the Dock AND now provides a checkbox to turn off the menu bar transparency also introduced in 10.5.0.
