Site Theme Update

April 26th, 2007 in Site News

I’ve made more significant changes to the appearance of the site. A little less ornamentation, less clutter in the sidebar, hopefully a bit easier to read, and it is no longer fixed width. The site content now fills the entire width of your browser window.

I’ll probably still be making minor tweaks for a while but if you spot any problems please let me know as soon as possible by emailing me at webmaster@acamug.org

Apple’s 2nd Quarter Earnings Asplode

April 25th, 2007 in Apple

Apple’s 2nd quarter earnings grew 88% over last year making it the most profitable in the company’s history:

Apple shipped 1,517,000 Macintosh® computers and 10,549,000 iPods during the quarter, representing 36 percent growth in Macs and 24 percent growth in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

“The Mac is clearly gaining market share, with sales growing 36 percent—more than three times the industry growth rate,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re very excited about the upcoming launch of iPhone in late June, and are also hard at work on some other amazing new products in our pipeline.”

Another Call for Posters

April 18th, 2007 in ACAMUG, Site News

I’m still on the hunt for two or three ACAMUG members who would be interested in posting news items to the site. It’s very quick and easy to do, and everything can be done from any web browser. No special web coding skills required, its about as complicated as writing an email. Post news, opinion, reviews, whatever you want as long as it’s relevant to ACAMUG. We’ve got a great resource here but we need more diversity, different voices.

If you want to give it a try send me a message at webmaster@acamug.org and feel free to ask questions.

April '07 Meeting: Social Networking

Topic
Global Social Networking (with YouTube and MySpace)
When
Friday April 13th 2007, 7:30pm – 10pm
Who
Tim Branin
Where
Room M129, Building M, ACCC Mays Landing Campus

User generated content is the latest Next Big Thingâ„¢ on the Net and Tim will show us two of the most popular: YouTube for video and MySpace “a place for friends.”

YouTube is ground zero for the latest in viral videos, animations, old and obscure TV shows and pretty much anything else you can thing of in moving images.

MySpace has become the de-facto online home for pretty much every teenager, every band looking for their big break and even some politicians trying to reach beyond the TV generation.

Presentation topics may change so be sure to verify on the day of the meeting. Got questions you’d like to have answered? Feel free to post them here as comments before the meeting so the presenters have a chance to prepare.

Leopard to Pounce in October

April 12th, 2007 in Apple

Well it looks like the Spring ship date for Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) is a casualty of Apple’s efforts to complete the iPhone for June. Here is the official statement directly from Apple’s site:

iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can’t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard’s features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we’re sure we’ve made the right ones. [Apr 12, 2007]

So we’ll have a few months longer wait than expected, not great news for Leopard but good news for those who won’t have to wait for their iPhones.
