The Apple TV, what some people are calling Apple’s true video iPod or more accurately an iPod for Video, started shipping last week and can be also be found in the physical Apple Stores and Best Buys. Feature-wise its identical to what Steve Jobs described back in January but there have also been a few interesting surprises.

Just an FYI: I’ve made a few changes to the site to reduce the amount of behind-the-scenes effort needed to keep spam from appearing in the post comments. In addition to several hidden mechanisms you are now required to solve a simple math addition problem when posting a comment. One digit numbers only so I don’t think it will pose a particularly taxing effort on your part but it should be sufficient to foil spam-bots.
Please let me know if you bump into any strange behavior on the site after this change.
Mac OS X 10.4.9, the latest update to “Tiger”, is now available via both Software Update in the Apple menu and direct download from Apple’s web site. In development for several months, 10.4.9 includes many bug fixes in many areas of Mac OS X (click here for details) Several sites have reported that iChat AV now directly supports additional USB video camera models without the need for 3rd party drivers or hacks.
Also available are an update to iPhoto (v6.0.6) and a security update for Mac OS X 10.3.9 (”Panther.)

Apple has released iTunes version 7.1 and QuickTime version 7.1.5.
iTunes 7.1 brings Apple TV compatibility, full-screen cover flow and “improved sorting options”.
QuickTime 7.1.5 contains bug fixes plus security updates.
Both are available via direct download or by choosing Software Update from the Apple menu.
