DiskWarrior Discount info

February 19th, 2007 in ACAMUG

Just heard from Amy at Alsoft and they are offering ACAMUG members a $15 discount on DiskWarrior 4 which is compatible with both PowerPC and the new Intel Macs (normally $99.95, our price $84.95) and a $20 discount on their venerable font management software MasterJuggler 3 (normally $89.95, our price $69.95.) The offer expires April 30th, 2007.

Anyone interested in taking advantage of this discount should either email me at webmaster @ acamug . org (without the spaces) or wait until the March meeting for a printed copy.

DiskWarrior is widely considered to be the best disk recovery software available for the Mac and here is an opportunity to grab a copy at a reduced price.

DiskWarrior by Alsoft

The stars were misaligned, a stray gamma ray hit exactly the wrong transistor, or you tripped over the computer’s A.C. cord. Doesn’t matter the cause, your Mac’s hard drive isn’t well and you need to rescue your data. DiskWarrior is rapidly becoming the first tool of choice in these situations. Combining a simple interface with innovative disk repair techniques it has managed to repair disk problems other tools cannot. Mike will demo the latest release, version 4.0, which adds support for native execution and disk repair for Intel based Macs (MacBook, MacBook Pro and the latest desktop Macs.)

Alsoft is sending us a free copy for the meeting and a special discount code for ACAMUG members.

And, time permitting, Mike may also show us the new features of the latest release of Print Explosion by Nova Development, “the fastest, easiest way to create spectacular custom print projects”.

UPDATE: Congratulations to Carolyn for winning the DiskWarrior package, for everyone else Alsoft has promised up a user group discount offer. I’ll post the details when I get them.

Windows Expert Chooses Macs

February 8th, 2007 in Apple

After a three month immersion in Mac OS X on a 17 inch MacBook Pro Scot Finnie of ComputerWorld has decided to stick with the Mac as his primary machine. Having spent “hundreds of hours testing Windows Vista” he is obviously familiar with what its capable of and his opinion is that Apple’s operating system is the better choice (he also currently recommends Windows XP over Vista.)

Microsoft’s marketing materials for a past version of Windows used the phrase, “It just works.” But the only computer that tagline honestly describes is the Macintosh.

Its a fairly long article, and there are also two previously published parts in the series, but it’s worth checking out how an honest to goodness Windows pro approached his three month experiment with the Mac and ultimately decided it was the better choice. Scot is still looking for a few specific pieces of Mac software so help him out if you have suggestions.

UPDATE: Courtesy of Damian, here is a link to Forbes’ Vista review:

As you might guess from the title they aren’t exactly blown away by it. In fact its a pretty brutal review:

The new slogan is: “The ‘Wow’ Starts Now,” and Microsoft touts new features, many filched shamelessly from Apple’s Macintosh. But as with every previous version, there’s no wow here, not even in ironic quotes. Vista is at best mildly annoying and at worst makes you want to rush to Redmond, Wash. and rip somebody’s liver out.

Probably not the reaction the Redmond folks were hoping for.

Steve Jobs – Thoughts on Music

February 6th, 2007 in Apple

Apple has posted a Steve Jobs authored piece discussing his thoughts on Digital Rights Managed (DRMed) music and it is well worth a few minutes of your time. Here’s a sample:

The third alternative is to abolish DRMs entirely. Imagine a world where every online store sells DRM-free music encoded in open licensable formats. In such a world, any player can play music purchased from any store, and any store can sell music which is playable on all players. This is clearly the best alternative for consumers, and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat. If the big four music companies would license Apple their music without the requirement that it be protected with a DRM, we would switch to selling only DRM-free music on our iTunes store. Every iPod ever made will play this DRM-free music.

He makes a lot of sense. Go check it out.
