17 inch MacBook Pro Announced

April 24th, 2006 in General

Apple has officially announced a 17 inch model of the Intel processor powered MacBook Pro. Beyond a larger screen this model adds the following over the 15 inch version:

  • 2.16GHz Core Duo processor standard (2GHz as an option)
  • 120GB hard drive standard
  • 8X SuperDrive (versus 4X)
  • 3 USB ports (versus 2)
  • A Firewire 800 port

The cost is $2799, the same as a 15″ MacBook Pro upgraded to a 2.16GHz processor so this seems to be a pretty good deal relatively speaking.

April '06 Meeting: iWork 06

Topic
iWork 06 (Pages and Keynote)
Presenters
Carolyn Patterson & Mike Bloom
When
Friday April 14th 2006, 7:30pm – 10pm
Where
Room M129, Building M, ACCC Mays Landing Campus

Rumor has it that Carolyn is really happy with the new version of Apple’s Pages word processor and tonight we’ll find out why and see what Mike’s learned using Keynote to create a presentation for a promotional video to be used in his dental office.

With any luck we’ll also have a bit to say and maybe show about Apple’s Boot Camp which allows you to install and boot Windows XP on an Intel Mac.

Presentation topics may change so be sure to verify on the day of the meeting. Got questions you’d like to have answered? Feel free to post them as comments before the meeting so the presenters have a chance to prepare.

Boot Camp Doesn’t Invalidate MacBookPro Warranty

April 13th, 2006 in General

You may or may not be aware of the fact that Apple recently released a software update it calls ‘Boot Camp’, which allows owners of Intel-based Macs to install and boot Windows XP, as well as boot to their original OS X partition. There are many, many rave reviews for Boot Camp, and more than a few cautionary tales of woe as well.

While Apple still maintains that they do not support beta software, which what Boot Camp has been classified as, they recently released a statement that they WILL honor the hardware warranty if your new ‘Intel inside’ Mac kicks the bucket after installing Boot Camp. That may not do you much good if your OS X partition heads south after installing Windows (as some have claimed happend to them), but at least if the absolute worst case scenario happens, your machine itself is covered.

Gruber on Boot Camp

April 10th, 2006 in General

John Gruber of Daring Fireball provides the most consistently intelligent and honest analysis of matters relating to Apple Computer (period, end of sentence.) Lately he’s been writing about the implications of Apple’s Boot Camp, the technology that allows dual-booting Mac OS X and Windows XP on Intel Macs, and once again his take is excellent:

And this follow-up tackles on a few other pundits’ views:

And the latest entry on the topic:
