Collin’s Hidden iPod Command Guide

March 31st, 2006 in General

Just to prove that Collin is keeping himself busy, here is a link to a post with an animated representation of hidden iPod command button combinations for hard reset, diagnostic mode and to force disk mode:

We’re still looking for a few members interested in posting items on the web site’s main page. No need to churn out lots of entries, just post something when the mood hits be it news, product review, opinion pieces, anything of direct interest to the group. We need more voices in the mix to keep info flowing through the site.

Contact webmaster@acamug.org if you are interested.

Viewing Windows Movies on Mac OS X

March 24th, 2006 in General

(updated 06-Mar-24)

From time to time I run into web pages with embedded or downloadable videos that are in Windows AVI format. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player for the Mac has always seemed to me to be, shall we say, problematic (i.e. crash-prone and incompatible) and it appears Microsoft might agree because they’ve announced that they are discontinuing support for it and instead recommend using a Quicktime plug-in called Flip4Mac that works better and allows playback in Quicktime Player and as embedded web page videos in Safari. Download the installer here:

it is free for playback support, you have to pay $30 for the Pro version if you want to be able to create your own AVIs but that’s not needed for typical use. If you’ve got an Intel based Mac you’ll have to wait a while longer because the current version is PowerPC only, but an Intel Mac version is in development.

Front Row, iTunes, iPhoto, Security Updates

March 1st, 2006 in Apple, Security

Apple has posted the promised update to Front Row, supporting updates to iTunes and iPhoto and a significant security update, all currently available only via Software Update.

The Front Row update adds support for playing Shared Music, Photos and Movies residing on other Macs on your home network. It is only available on machines that shipped with the Apple IR remote control. The updates to iTunes (6.0.4) and iPhoto (6.0.2) presumably include support for the new Front Row shared media feature.

Security Update 2006-001 (details) includes a laundry list of fixes including closing the “open safe files” loophole used by the recent proof-of-concept worm/trojan horse and a change to iChat to prevent its use to distribute malicious software.

This is a significant security update so its probably a good idea to install it sooner rather than later.
