Today’s (Feb 28th) Apple Event Announcements

February 28th, 2006 in Apple

Short and sweet. The major new products are:

  • New Intel processor based Mac minis that are about 4X faster and include Front Row and the IR remote control. Note: these new minis steal their video memory from the main memory pool which means the default 512MB of RAM is probably not sufficient for typical desktop use, upgrade to 1GB at least.
  • A new iPod Hi-Fi Apple branded iPod speaker system that runs off batteries or A.C.
  • Leather cases for 5th generation iPods and nanos ($99)

Also, Front Row can now access music, video and photos shared from iTunes and iPhoto on your home network. I just checked Software Update and the new Front Row is not available for my MacBook Pro but hopefully it will be shortly.

So no rumored iTunes Movie Store or “real” iPod video just yet. Maybe on April 1st, Apple’s 30th anniversary?

Let’s get a good discussion going in the comments.

Security issue with .ZIP archives

February 21st, 2006 in Security

06-Mar-01 UPDATE: Security Update 2006-001 should fix this issue.

Files that end with .zip are compressed archives containing several files and/or folders. You can create them by CONTROL-clicking on files or folders in the Finder then selecting “Create archive of …” from the contextual menu that appears. They are sometimes also used to package downloads into a single file.

Presenter
Joe Mancine
When
Friday March 10th 2006, 7:30pm – 10pm
Where
Room M129, Building M, ACCC Mays Landing Campus

Why just listen when you can Do It Yourself! Joe is spending the month learning how to create his own Podcast using the latest GarageBand (in iLife 06) and will be sharing his experiences with us. What is a Podcast? Part radio show, part weblog with a bit of multi-media thrown in for good measure. Apple thinks its important enough to dedicate a section of the iTunes Music Store to it, now you can join in on the fun too.

Presentation topics may change so be sure to verify on the day of the meeting. Got questions you’d like to have answered? Feel free to post them as comments before the meeting so the presenters have a chance to prepare.

Mac OS X 10.4.5 Update is Available

February 14th, 2006 in Apple, Updates

Apple has posted the 10.4.5 update to Mac OS X 10.4 (”Tiger”), available via both Software Update or (our preferred format) a single 10.4.5 Combo Updater that includes all previous updates.

As usual, you can choose to wait a few days before upgrading to ensure there are no unexpected problems.

Feel free to add your upgrade experiences, good and bad, to the comments section.
